Brief Overall Description of the Dataset:
Planet Labs provides low-cost imaging satellites at 3-5m resolution, known as Doves, and were first launched in 2013 . aim is to launch an “estimated magic number of 150 satellites” -- the largest armada in orbit -- to create an Earth observation satellite constellation with open data access. Satellite imagery from the Dove satellites is delivered via API and web tools. Before being viewed, each image is processed through an automated data pipeline. API users can then integrate Planet Labs imagery data into the their products, workflows, and analyses.

Screening
- Is the data collected opinion-based?
- Is the data collection recurring (must be collected at least annually)?
- Is there data available for 2013?
- For Housing: Is the data collected at the property or housing unit level?
- Can we access the data by August 15th?
Purpose
What is the purpose of the organization collecting the data?
At Planet Labs, we’ve made it our mission to make global change visible, accessible and actionable for those who need it most.
Why is it collected and how does the organization use it?
Data supports customers who need easily accessed, fresh imagery to inform their day-to-day operations, data analysis, and products.
Who else uses the data?
Researchers, non-profits, and organizations that look at food security, environmental monitoring, urban planning, disaster response, public health and climate resilience.
Who do they sell the data to?
Non-profits, international organizations, researchers
Method
What is the data collection method?
Satellites (called Doves)
What is the type of data collected?
Imagery
If designed, who created the questions?
What is the raw source of the collected data (prior to any aggregation)?
Satellite images
Description
What is the general topic of the data (1-2 words)?
Satellite imaging
What are the earliest and latest dates for which data is available?
Not stated -- First Doves were launched in 2013
Is data collected and available periodically?
Yes, daily
How soon after a reference period ends can a data source be prepared and provided?
Not stated
Selectivity
What is the universe (e.g., population) that the data represents?
The planet
Accessibility
- How is the data accessed?
Each image is processed through an automated data pipeline and delivered to customers via API and web tools.
- Is it open data?
Not yet
Any legal, regulatory, or administrative restrictions on accessing the data source?
Not stated
Cost? - One time or annual or project based payment?
Not stated
Does this dataset appear to meet our needs for the Census study? No
Explanation:
Data does not cover the time period of interest. Imaging can be used in future projects as more data is collected.
