Survey samples "approximately 143,000 businesses and government agencies representing approximately 588,000 worksites throughout the United States." These sites “employ 40 percent of the total nonfarm population. All establishments with 1000 employees or more are asked to participate in the survey along with a representative sample of smaller establishments.” These include employees in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and about 450 metropolitan areas and divisions.
